CASHEW (GAJUS)

People especially Malay likes this herb very much especially its leaves. The tastiness of its leaves attracts people to eat it. People eat the leaves with rice and make it as a side dish. We just need to wash its leaves and it is ready to eat. It can be eat freshly. This plant becomes difficult to find nowadays because the plant only grows in the sandy soil. So, most of this plant can be found in the east of Peninsular Malaysia because it is near the beach.

Cashew comes from Anarcadiaceae family. The scientific name of this plant is Anacardium occidentale (L). Cashew is originated from South America. Based on history, Portuguese had brought the plant into Malaya through Goa during colonization. Goa is located in India.

This is the unique plant when its fruit has seed at the outside. The seed looks like our kidney. It is grey and the seed is famous because of its taste. Normally, the seed will be grilled. The grilled nut will turn to yellow. The grilled nuts are available at the market. The different place has different name. In Kelantan, they call cashew as ‘ketereh’. While in other places, mostly they call cashew as ‘jambu golok’.

Next, cashew tree is not too big and medium in size. It can reach until twelve metres high. The fruit comes in two colours that are green and red. The taste of the fruit is sour. The outer fruit is oily and slick. The fruit can be used in cooking but, we need to neutral it because of it tastes that quite chelate.

Besides, the tree produces a yellow liquid at the bark. It will turn to black when it is exposed to sunlight. The leaf is very thick and its shape like obovate. Normally, the young leaf is red. This leaf will be used as a side dish (ulam). The leaf also gives a sweet aroma.

All the parts of the tree have its own nutrition. It can be used to treat high blood pressure, diabetes, ulcer and toothache. It also helps in bone and muscle growth.

          a) The young leaf (red) – Boil the water with a few leaves. Then,  

                                        drink the water in order to treat high

                                        blood pressure, diabetes and ulcer. The

                                        leaf also can be eating freshly as a daily

                                        side dish (ulam).​

          b) Root – The root needs to be boiling with water. This water can  

                      cure toothache, high blood pressure and diabetes. â€‹
 

​

          c) Fruit – It helps in growing the bone and muscles. It is rich in  

                      magnesium.
