As we all know, there are many Malaysian folktales that being told from mouth to mouth by our ancestors. So, in our site, we provide you with three famous folktales from our culture. Do enjoy your reading guys!

BERUK TUNGGAL

 

Once upon a time, there was a castle near the river bank where the King and his seven princess lived. The most beloved princess was Puteri Bongsu. At the other side of the river, there was a small house where a woman lived there with her ape called Beruk Tunggal. One day, Beruk Tunggal had met Raja Tikus to warn him to stay away from her mother’s paddy field. Raja Tikus afraid of Beruk Tunggal as he knew that Beruk Tunggal was a fairy prince. So, he gave a lot of gold to him. Beruk Tunggal asked her mother to propose one of the King’s princess to be his wife. Puteri Bongsu accepted the proposal and they got married. Once they got married, Puteri Bongsu knew that her husband actually was a prince when she found the ape’s case. Finally, they lived happily when they got their own castle.

​MAN'S EATING STONE

 

This is the legend folktales from Malacca. This story is about Puteri Gunung Ledang whom staying at the peak of Mount Ledang. The beauty of the princess is known to the entire Malacca and finally being heard by Sultan Mahmud Syah. The Sultan has ordered Tun Mamat to go to the mount and ask the princess for a marriage. Tun Mamat failed to meet the Princess but he had talked to Nenek Kebayan, the princess’s guardian. Then, the Nenek Kebayan told him that the princess is willing to accept the proposal if the Sultan can prepare her seven marriage gifts. Sultan Mahmud Syah was able to fulfill six of the marriage gift but, when he tried to sacrifice his own son for the last conditions, the Princess appeared in front of Him. The princess then told him that she actually had rejects the proposal and the marriage gift are just an excuses.

THE LEGEND OF PUTERI GUNUNG LEDANG

​

This story told us about a mother, Mak Melur and her two children, Si Kuntum and Pekan . She needed to work to find food for her children. Now, Mak Melur did a lot of works such as farming and work as a maid after her husband died to go on their living. One day, she got a fish. She asked Si Kuntum to cook it and  saved some for her. When, Si Kuntum and Pekan had their lunch, Pekan asked for an extra eggs but Si Kuntum refused to give it as the left eggs were spent for their mother. Unexpectedly, Pekan took the egg by himself. Mak Melur asked for her egg when she returned home from work, but, got shocked as she did not see any fish eggs in the pot. Mak Melur got angry and sulked with her children. Then, she walked out and went to the jungle to find the haunted stone. She wanted to surrender to the stone. When Pekan and Si Kuntum arrived in front of the stone, they could not see her mother anymore and they cried and got sleep there.
